Distinguished and Famous people from Glenrowan

🌟 Thomas Curnow

Glenrowan schoolteacher Thomas Curnow played a crucial part in the events surrounding the Kelly gang’s final siege in 1880. After being allowed to leave the gang’s captives, he warned the approaching police train that the railway line had been damaged for an ambush. His statement survives in Victoria’s public records, recording his own account of the warning. Curnow’s intervention helped avert a train disaster. Remembering the teacher alongside the bushrangers also restores attention to a local resident whose decision was concerned with saving lives.
