Glenrowan, located in the state of Victoria in Australia, is a small town with a rich history. The town is located approximately 236km north-east of Melbourne and is known for its connection to the infamous outlaw Ned Kelly.

Early Settlement

The area where Glenrowan now stands was first inhabited by the Taungurung people. In the 1830s, European settlers began to arrive in the area, with farming becoming the main industry in the region.

The township of Glenrowan was established in the 1860s. The town was named after John Glenny, a farmer who owned land in the area. The first hotel in Glenrowan, The Railway Hotel, was also built in the 1860s. The railway line from Melbourne to Sydney was completed in the 1870s, which brought more people and business to the town.

The Kelly Gang

Ned Kelly and his gang arrived in Glenrowan in June 1880. They had been on the run from the police for several months and were desperate for supplies. They took over the local hotel, now known as the Glenrowan Inn, and held dozens of people hostage.

The Kelly gang's last stand occurred in Glenrowan on June 28, 1880. The police had been tipped off about the gang's whereabouts and had surrounded the hotel. A shootout occurred between the police and the Kelly gang, resulting in the death of three members of the gang and the capture of Ned Kelly, who was later hanged in Melbourne.

The Aftermath

The Kelly gang's siege in Glenrowan put the town on the map and its story has been retold in various books, movies, and television shows. Today, the town has several sites related to the Kelly gang, including the Glenrowan Inn, which has been turned into a museum dedicated to the Kelly gang's story.

In addition to its connection to the Kelly gang, Glenrowan is also known for its wineries, which produce some of the finest wines in Victoria. The town celebrates its connection to Ned Kelly with an annual festival, the Ned Kelly Weekend, which features reenactments, concerts, and other events.
