Distinguished and Famous people from Glenrowan

1. Ned Kelly

Ned Kelly (1854–1880) was one of Australia's most infamous bushrangers and a significant historical figure. He was born in Beveridge, just outside of Glenrowan, and later moved to Glenrowan with his family. Ned Kelly became known for his criminal activities and subsequent outlawry, leading to a series of confrontations with law enforcement, including the notable siege at Glenrowan. Despite his criminal life, he is remembered by some as a folk hero symbolizing resistance against corruption and oppression.

2. Dan Kelly

Dan Kelly (1861–1880) was the younger brother of Ned Kelly and a member of the Kelly Gang, a group of bushrangers led by Ned Kelly. Born in Beveridge, Dan Kelly grew up in Glenrowan and became involved in his brother's criminal activities. Alongside Ned, Dan participated in the Glenrowan siege, where he lost his life along with other gang members during a shootout with the police.

3. Steve Hart

Steve Hart (1860–1880) was another member of the notorious Kelly Gang. Born in Wangaratta, he moved to Glenrowan where he became acquainted with the Kelly family and joined their criminal endeavors. Like Ned and Dan Kelly, Steve Hart was present during the Glenrowan siege but died by suicide during the confrontation.

4. Joe Byrne

Joe Byrne (1857–1880) was the fourth and final member of the Kelly Gang. Originally from Beechworth, he developed a close friendship with Ned Kelly and joined the gang. Joe Byrne also participated in the Glenrowan siege and died during the shootout with the police.

5. Thomas Curnow

Thomas Curnow (1848–1917) was a schoolteacher who played a crucial role in ending the Glenrowan siege. Born in Castlemaine, he was living in Glenrowan at the time of the confrontation. Curnow managed to warn the police about the gang's plans, allowing them to strategize and ultimately bring an end to the siege. His actions were hailed as brave and instrumental in capturing Ned Kelly.

6. John "Jack" Williamson

John "Jack" Williamson (1866–1949) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Born in Glenrowan, Williamson became known as one of the sport's early stars. He played as a forward and was known for his goal-scoring ability. Williamson was also noted for his sportsmanship, earning the respect of teammates and opponents alike.
